Mayo Beach overlooks Wellfleet Harbor and the not-so-distant Breakwater Light. This beach is pretty long, but loses a lot of space during high tide. However, at low tide there isn't much water to swim in, and the sand can get muddy and shelly. The water is calm and warm and the beach is bordered by beach grass. The view is beautiful, with a rock jetty, boats heading in and out of the harbor, and the dunes of Great Island providing a relaxing scene. If the kids get bored with the beach, take them to the playground at Baker's Field across the street.
Parking can be limited, but there is more just down the road at the town pier. Beach access is free and so is parking if you can get a space in the small lot by Great Island. If not, a large town parking lot is close by at the town pier. Restrooms are located at Baker's Field, and if you get hungry several restaurants are located in the harbor area.
